What a wonderful day!!
Saturday, June 14th began with sunshine and low winds – perfection… for some fun and competitive pickleball. We had more registrants for this tournament than any previous tourney; 132 pickleball players registered in 8 events with skill levels ranging from 2.5 – 4.0 and ages ranging from 13 – 77 yrs. As the clouds gathered in the later afternoon, the players, spectators and volunteers sought shelter while the thunderstorm began to cover the courts with Calgary’s proverbial explosion of afternoon rains.
The volunteers quickly gathered and/or protected the snacks, fruit, and energy drinks from the Players’ Tent; signs and banners from on and around the courts; games like bocce, ladder ball, frisbee and badminton; and the critical epicentre that included the referee, computer and score tables. We enjoyed the help of 7 referees covering a total of 83 games throughout the day. Thank you, Refs!!!
Many CPC members and Board members volunteered to setup and a few critical members helped keep the tournament fun and functioning all day. (A special thanks to Gary, Cindy, Claire, Karen, Suman, Paula, and others for their energy and engagement to the making of the most memorable and magic Kick-Off Tourney EVER!!) The Rotary Club of Calgary were gracious in providing 10 additional volunteers. The Rotary reached out to CPC a few months back and we are looking to team up for some future tournaments, as well. Thank you Rotary!!!
While some events had been completed before the torrential rains several events were relegated to indoor play the following weekend at Mega Courts. Congratulations to ALL players, especially the following medal winners:
