Lynn Lehr – our outgoing Secretary

Lynn joined the Board in 2022 and has been a tremendous asset to our club. Her organization and smiling face will be much missed on our Board.

We caught up with Lynn to ask some questions about her Pickleball journey.

When did you join the CPC board and why: I joined the Board in January 2022, because (a) I LOVE this sport; (b) volunteering has been a part of my DNA for many years; and (c) I’ve sat on different Boards, and thought I might have some knowledge that would be useful to the Calgary Pickleball Club.

Why would someone want to join the board: The Calgary Pickleball Club has been evolving over the few years I’ve been involved, and I think it’s important to get new perspectives as the Club looks to the future. As our demographics get younger, I hope these members make their voices heard and contribute their ideas on where the Club should put its energies and how it can be made better.

How did you first get introduced to pickleball, and what made you fall in love with the sport? I was introduced to pickleball one winter in Phoenix, when I was on a golf holiday. I heard this noise like “thunk-a-thunk-a-thunk”, and lots of laughing, so decided to check it out. After watching people play, someone invited me to give it a try, and I was hooked! But it was the obvious fun that everyone was having that really made me enjoy the game so much.

Can you share a memorable experience or highlight from your time at the Calgary Pickleball Club? As a new member (back in 2017), I met another new member and we quickly developed a pickleball friendship, supporting each other at play sessions and taking lessons together. As she was originally from Peru, she invited me to join her on a trip back to Peru, where we visited her family and many amazing sights, including Machu Picchu, a dream come true, all thanks to pickleball!

What do you enjoy most about being part of the pickleball community at our club? I love the fact that I have a whole new social circle of friends, staying active and sharing lots of laughs.

Are there any specific skills or strategies you’ve been working on to improve your pickleball game? I’m still working on basics, like dinking and drop shots, to improve my consistency.

How do you balance your time between playing pickleball and other aspects of your life? What balance?? 😂 No pickleball on weekends…I do need some time to do laundry and clean the house!

What role do you think pickleball plays in promoting a healthy and active lifestyle? I think pickleball plays a HUGE role in promoting not only an active lifestyle, but promoting social connectedness, which has been particularly important since coming out of the pandemic years. Watching people come together, play fun games, laugh and sometimes socialize after games, all contributes to an important sense of well-being.

Lastly, what does being a part of the pickleball club mean to you, and how has it enriched your overall experience with the sport? Being a member of this Club for 6+ years has introduced me to so many interesting people, that my life experience has definitely been enriched by the experience, especially since I’m retired. Also, my holidays look a little different now, too…there’s always room in my luggage for my paddle, shoes and a few balls.
